Your helicopter training pathway

Helicopter pilot training is flexible and tailored to your goals. Students don’t need to complete licences in a fixed sequence — instead, you choose the pathway that suits how you want to fly.

Most students begin with no aviation experience and start with a Trial Introductory Flight, then move into one of two main pathways.

Recreational & private flying pathway`

Many people learn to fly purely for enjoyment and personal travel.
These students typically train directly toward the Private Pilot Licence (PPL).

The PPL allows you to:

• Fly helicopters for personal use
• Carry passengers
• Travel and explore
• Continue flying recreationally

This pathway focuses on building strong skills and confidence for private flying.

Professional pilot pathway

Students who want a career in helicopter aviation usually train directly toward the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL(H)).

Commercial training develops:

• Advanced flying skills
• Professional decision-making
• Operational and safety knowledge
• Skills required for employment in the helicopter industry

Pilots training for the CPL may qualify for a Private Pilot Licence along the way, but completing a PPL is not required before starting or finishing CPL training.

Start with a Trial Introductory Flight

Regardless of your long-term goals, almost everyone begins with a Trial Introductory Flight.

During your first flight you will:

• Meet your instructor
• Learn the basic helicopter controls
• Experience hovering and manoeuvring
• Discuss your goals and training pathway

This is the best way to experience helicopter flying before committing to training.

Advanced and recurrent training

After gaining your licence, many pilots continue developing their skills through advanced and recurrent training such as night flying, low level training, type endorsements and flight reviews.

Choosing the right helicopter flight school

Choosing where to train is one of the most important decisions in your helicopter flying journey. The right flight school will provide a supportive learning environment, modern aircraft, experienced instructors and training in real-world airspace that prepares you for the way helicopters are actually flown.

Before starting training, it’s worth understanding what makes a high-quality training organisation and what to look for when comparing schools.
