Helicopter Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
The Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is the most versatile recreational helicopter licence in Australia. It removes the distance restrictions of the RPL, allows you to fly piston or turbine helicopters, and qualifies you to operate anywhere in Australian airspace — making it the licence of choice for pilots who want genuine freedom in the air.

What the PPL allows you to do
With a PPL(H) you can fly privately throughout Australia in piston and turbine helicopters, carry passengers, conduct cross-country navigation flights, and operate in all classes of controlled airspace. Unlike the RPL, there are no geographic restrictions on where you can fly.

Who is the PPL suited to?
The PPL is ideal for pilots who want to use a helicopter as a genuine form of personal travel — flying to regional destinations, exploring the coast, or taking passengers on longer trips. It's also the natural stepping stone for anyone who wants to eventually own or share a helicopter.

What are the requirements?
To be issued a PPL(H) you must:
-
Be at least 17 years of age at the time of licence issue
-
Hold a Class 2 Medical Certificate or above
-
Complete a minimum of 40 hours total flight time, including at least 10 hours solo, of which 5 hours must be solo cross-country navigation
-
Pass a PPL(H) flight test conducted by a CASA-approved examiner
-
Pass the PPL aeronautical knowledge theory exam

How long does PPL training take?
Students flying once or twice a week typically complete their PPL within six to twelve months. The cross-country navigation component means you'll fly to destinations beyond Bankstown — building real-world skills, not just circuit proficiency.

PPL vs CPL — which should you do?
If your goal is a professional flying career, you don't need to complete a PPL first — you can train directly toward the CPL. The PPL makes most sense for those whose primary goal is recreational and personal flying, or who want a strong foundation before deciding on a commercial pathway. Our instructors can help you choose the right route at your trial flight.
Training at Bankstown Airport
Bankstown is one of Australia's most active aviation environments. PPL students at TMRH develop strong radio skills, situational awareness and cross-country navigation ability from real flying — not simulators. The controlled airspace experience you build here is directly transferable to any flying you do after your licence.
