How do I start helicopter pilot training in Sydney?

Most students begin with a Trial Instructional Flight. You’ll fly with an instructor, experience helicopter controls and discuss the training pathway that suits your goals.

What are the requirements for a Commercial Helicopter Licence (CPL-H) in Australia?

To earn your CPL-H, you must be 18, hold a Class 1 Medical Certificate, and complete either a 105-hour or 150-hour syllabus. At TMRH Bankstown, we guide you through all seven CASA theory exams and flight tests.

Do I need any aviation experience to start?

No experience is required. Many students start with no aviation background and progress step-by-step through the training pathway.

Where are you located?

We are based at Bankstown Airport in Sydney, one of Australia’s busiest helicopter training environments.

What is the cost of helicopter flight training at Bankstown?

Training costs vary based on your licence goal and training frequency. We offer pay-as-you-go training and can provide personalised cost guidance after your first flight. Check out our Training Prices & Cost Guide page for more information.

How long does it take to become a helicopter pilot?

Training time varies depending on how often you fly. Some students train part-time while working, while others train more intensively to progress faster.

What helicopter do students train in?

Students train in the Guimbal Cabri G2, a modern helicopter designed specifically for safety and training. Students may elect to train in other aircraft if desired.

Can I train part-time while working?

Yes. Many students train part-time and schedule lessons around work and personal commitments.

Why should I learn to fly at Bankstown Airport (YSBK) instead of a regional airfield?

Training at Bankstown (YSBK) provides immediate exposure to controlled airspace and professional radio procedures. This high-traffic experience makes our graduates more competitive for aviation jobs in Sydney and across Australia.

Is helicopter training safe?

Safety is our highest priority. Training is conducted by qualified instructors using modern aircraft and structured training programs.

Can I visit before starting training?

Yes. We strongly recommend that prospective students come and meet the team, see the aircraft and discuss training options.

Can I become a helicopter pilot as a career?

Yes. Students progress through training to the Commercial Pilot Licence, which is required to work as a professional helicopter pilot.

What careers are available for helicopter pilots?

Helicopter pilots work in tourism, charter, aerial work, mustering, emergency services and many other specialised roles.

How old do I need to be to start?

You can begin training at 16 and work toward licences as you progress.
