Helicopter Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL)
The Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) is the entry point to helicopter flying in Australia. It's the ideal choice if you want to fly for the pure enjoyment of it — exploring your local area, taking friends and family up, or simply experiencing the freedom of flight without committing to a full private or commercial pathway.
What the RPL allows you to do
With an RPL(H) you can act as pilot in command of a piston-powered helicopter, carry passengers, and fly within 25 nautical miles of your departure aerodrome. Additional endorsements — including navigation and controlled airspace — can be added to extend these privileges significantly, giving you more flexibility without needing to complete a full PPL.
Who is the RPL suited to?
The RPL suits people who want to fly recreationally and locally without the time and cost commitment of a full PPL or CPL pathway. It's particularly popular with people who live near an aerodrome, want a licence as quickly as possible, or are testing whether flying is for them before committing further.
What are the requirements?
To be issued an RPL(H) you must:
-
Be at least 16 years of age at the time of licence issue
-
Hold a medical clearance appropriate for the RPL (Class 2 or above)
-
Complete a minimum of 25 hours total flight time, including at least 5 hours solo
-
Pass an RPL(H) flight test conducted by a CASA-approved examiner
-
Pass the RPL aeronautical knowledge theory exam
How long does RPL training take?
Most students flying once or twice a week complete their RPL within four to six months. Those who fly more intensively can progress faster. Because training at TMRH is pay-as-you-go and fully flexible, you set the pace.
Training at Bankstown Airport
All RPL training takes place at Bankstown Airport — one of Australia's busiest general aviation environments. From your very first lesson you'll be operating in controlled airspace, communicating on radio with real traffic. This builds skills and confidence that recreational pilots trained at quieter airfields simply don't develop.
Extending your RPL
Once you hold your RPL, you can add endorsements to expand what you're allowed to do — including navigation beyond 25nm and operations in controlled airspace. Many RPL holders later continue to PPL or CPL if their goals evolve.
